Catarina Barros Afonso
Catarina Afonso is a biologist (Applied Biology degree, University of Minho, 2006) with an MSc degree in Ecology (University of Coimbra, 2012). She is currently pursuing a PhD in Sustainable Land Use (TERRA PhD, Forests and Natural Resources Specialization) at the School of Agriculture (ISA) of the University of Lisbon, in colaboration with the Coimbra Agriculture School (ESAC) of the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra, being part of the Environment and Society group at CERNAS.
Her research has focused on the study of classical biological control as a method to manage invasive species (insect pests and invasive plants), including risk assessment of classical biological control agents introduced in Portugal, insect rearing and behavioural studies, and the analysis of biological control legislations and policies. Additionally, she has worked in environmental education and awareness, and plant germplasm conservation.
